OUR RATING
Ndoro sculpture garden is a touch of African art in stone and a unique tropical setting, located along casuarina road, Malindi. It is an enchanted garden full of Zimbabwean shona art pieces and a very knowledgeable and most charming curator.
The sculptures were made by different artists from Zimbabwe. It was opened in the 1960’s and has since gained international recognition for the historical and cultural significance of its artworks.
Along a winding path, you can admire over 300 breathtaking sculptures. Almost all are made from “serpentine stone”. As the guide takes you around the garden she explains each sculpture’s history, the stories behind their meaning, as well as detailed information about the artist who created them.
Visitors leave with a deeper understanding of the spiritual and historical significance of African sculptures in the tribal and cultural lives of the tribal people.
The sculptures depict a range of subjects including animals, human faces and more. There’s a sculpture of a woman’s torso that weighs around 400 Kgs and it took 9 grown men to move it from the gate to where it sits.
The garden itself is an amazing piece of landscaping art by itself. With landscaped plants and trees that embrace the artist spirit of the artworks. At the end of the tour there is a small shop where you can buy your own unique piece of artwork from Kenya and Zimbabwe to take home with you.
This is definitely one of Malindi’s best kept secrets. It’s such a divine place and impossible to believe that the tour is free of charge.
