The Portuguese Chapel in Malindi holds a fascinating history that intertwines with the age of exploration in the 15th and 16th century. It is situated near Malindi law courts, located at the seafront along Mama Ngina road in Old town Malindi.

The Portuguese explorers led by Vasco Da Gama were the first Europeans to reach the East African Coast in the late 15th century. They were searching for a sea route to India to establish trade connections.

The Portuguese Chapel was built in 1498 by Vasco Da Gama during his second voyage to India. The chapel served as a stronghold, offering protection and shelter for Portuguese sailors during their long perilous voyages. Its sturdy construction and strategic location made it a vital asset for Portuguese presence and control along the East African Coast.

The Portuguese Chapel has got a unique architecture design in that it is thatched with makuti and it has a cross on top. It has white walls made of sand and coral rocks. Has a security “window” in one wall that was allegedly used to see enemies from the ocean. The chapel has an altar mostly with the catholic religious paraphernalia and can accommodate 50-60 people while standing and 40 while sitting. It hosts over 36 graves of sailors and prominent people in the compound.

Despite the decline of Portuguese influence, the Portuguese Chapel in Malindi remains as a tangible reminder of this historical period. Over the centuries the chapel underwent renovations and restorations, preserving its architectural and cultural significance. Today it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the enduring legacy of Portuguese exploration and trade in East Africa.

After visiting why not visit the Seafront Restaurant nearby for a bite to eat? It serves the most amazing Swahili food and it comes highly recommended by us.  Maybe take a stroll along the beautiful white sandy beach that both the restaurant and the Portuguese Chapel sit on and take in the breath taking Indian Ocean in all it’s glory as you make your way there.
