OUR RATING
Â
Sabaki River Estuary offers a rich diversity of bird species including many rarities and numbers of gulls and terns. Sabaki is the name of the last segment of the second longest river in Kenya, the Athi-Galana-Sabaki.
It is located about 5 km North of the Malindi town, between the malindi-mambrui road bridge and the sea.
The estuary drains its water into the Indian Ocean. It is characterized by mangrove forests which provide a crucial habitat for various marine organisms. Birds are the most diverse and numerous during the migration season starting the months of August – April.
Sabaki Estuary is the best place in Malindi to see the Madagascar Pratincole, a threatened Afro-tropic malagasy migrant that is infrequently seen. The wintering Palaearctic wader, the broad-billed sandpiper, is found far out in the river mouth. Lesser flamingos also frequent Sabaki estuary when it is less flooded.
Human activities such as fishing and agriculture are done. Fishing provides the livelihoods of the local communities.
Conservation methods are underway to protect and sustainably manage the Sabaki estuary, ensuring its continued ecological health and the livelihoods of those who depend on it.
